What a resurfacing proposal at Goodwood Oval would move besides the surface

By Artigellence ·

A proposal to resurface 12 courts at Goodwood Oval would also move their south edge: the City of Unley's page says the court footprint would extend by approximately 9 metres into the former hockey pitch. That makes it a bigger job than recoating the same ground, and a reminder that a quote should say which job it is for. The resurface or rebuild page and the rules check cover the rest.

The proposal

What does the City of Unley's page say about the courts at Goodwood Oval?

The page, read on 7 October 2026, says council has given in-principle endorsement for a proposal by Tennis SA to resurface all 12 existing courts, which will require an extension of the current court footprint by approximately 9 metres south into the former hockey pitch.

It says the proposed upgrade to the courts is designed to address safety clearance non-compliance and provide viewing areas between courts.

Is the work certain?

No. The page says council is committed to supporting the proposal, subject to the project receiving formal development approval and Tennis SA securing the remaining funds required to undertake the court upgrades. This article does not say whether it went ahead.

What it would move

Why does the footprint matter to a quote?

A resurfacing that changes where a court's edge sits is a different job from recoating the same footprint. That reading is ours, not the council's: the page does not mention quotes. A provider pricing a recoat of the existing footprint and one pricing a larger one are not pricing the same job.

Does the page say the courts needed it?

No. It gives the council's reasons for the proposal, which are clearance and viewing areas, and says nothing about the state of any court's surface. Nothing here is a sign that any court needs resurfacing.

What the page leaves open

Does the large tree matter to the surface?

The page says the new boundary of the courts will be very close to a large significant tree located on the south-western corner. It does not say what effect, if any, that has on a court surface, so this article says nothing about it.

What does a coating's data sheet say about new ground?

One manufacturer's data sheet says: “Where cracking or subsidence is due to factors such as soil movement, poor sub-base preparation or poor quality concrete or bitumen, patching may not suffice. In such cases, a full engineering inspection is required.” The same sheet says: “Allow concrete to cure a minimum of 30 days”. Another manufacturer's data sheet says: “New concrete courts require a minimum 28 day curing period, and acid etching must be undertaken.” A new area of court is new ground, and a quote can say which sheet it works to.
