Resurface or Rebuild a Tennis Court in Adelaide

A court upgrade can reach well past the surface. The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters says the demolition works at its Payneham Oval tennis courts, which began in mid-March 2020, removed the playing surface together with fencing, kerbing and stormwater infrastructure, ahead of the upgrade of six tennis courts.

What tennis court resurfacing in Adelaide actually involves

That shows only that an upgrade can include the fence, the kerb and the drainage around a court, and that a quote may or may not include them; it says nothing about any other court. The Barossa Council's resurfacing job at Angas Recreation Park sits in the middle: its list includes base repair works and a new asphalt layer as well as acrylic layers, so even a 'resurfacing' there reached below the colour coat.

When the base is the problem

One manufacturer's data sheet says: “Where cracking or subsidence is due to factors such as soil movement, poor sub-base preparation or poor quality concrete or bitumen, patching may not suffice. In such cases, a full engineering inspection is required.” The same sheet says: “Patch minor cracks and holes to give a uniform surface, consistent in smoothness with the surrounding area.” Where one stops and the other starts is for an inspection to say, not for this site.

What to ask

Ask whether a quote is for the surface only or for the court around it, what it assumes about the base, the fence, the kerb and the drainage, and what happens to the price if the base turns out to need more than patching. This site states no price and no method.

The Payneham page is a council's own account of one rebuild, from 2020: the Payneham page sets out the line and its limits, and the quotes page turns it into questions to put to a provider. The data sheets page has the rest of what the sheets say.

Resurface or Rebuild a Tennis Court in Adelaide — common questions

Does a resurfacing include the base?

On one council's project it did: the Barossa Council's list includes quarry rubble base repair works and a new asphalt layer as well as new acrylic surfacing layers. That is one council's job, so ask what a quote includes.

Can a cracked court be patched?

One manufacturer's data sheet says: “Patch minor cracks and holes to give a uniform surface, consistent in smoothness with the surrounding area.” It also says: “Where cracking or subsidence is due to factors such as soil movement, poor sub-base preparation or poor quality concrete or bitumen, patching may not suffice. In such cases, a full engineering inspection is required.”

Does an upgrade include the fence and kerb?

At Payneham Oval it did: the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters says the demolition works removed the playing surface together with fencing, kerbing and stormwater infrastructure. Ask whether a quote includes them.
